Please, stop the madness going on at Hamilton Animal Control. Please ask them to open the shelter to public adoptions and stop killing wonderful, adoptable cats and kittens, and vet the ones they bring into the shelter so they do not suffer for days before being put to sleep. Please watch this video and open your hearts and voices and speak up against this abuse. This is happening in Ontario, Canada, and someone needs to stop this NOW before more kittens and cats are killed without being given a chance for adoptions.

Share my videos with everyone you know to get the word out there that this mass killing is happening every week in Canada.

The issues faced by Hamilton and their animal control are not unique, not in Ontario, not in Canada, and not in North America - nor are the solutions. Numerous communities around the world have faced the same problems and overcome them by implementing the 11 essential steps of the No Kill Equation*:

Feral Cat TNR Program
High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter
Rescue Groups
Foster Care
Comprehensive Adoption Programs
Pet Retention
Medical and Behavior Rehabilitation
Public Relations/Community Involvement
Volunteers
Proactive Redemptions
A Compassionate Director

For example, Washoe County Regional Animal Services and their partner Nevada Humane Society, save in excess of 90% of the 15,000 cats and dogs they take in each year. Calgary Animal Control is also doing an amazing job of educating their residents and returning lost pets. In recent years they returned 88% of the dogs they picked up and 44% of cats. Compare that to the rates in Ontario which are closer to 40% for dogs and 5% for cats.

Animal Ark in Minnesota has a full service TNR program that spays/neuters, vaccinates and treats each cat for fleas, etc... for $35/cat which is less then it would cost their local shelter to kill the cats. Trap-Neuter-Return is the ONLY program that has been successfully documented to save the lives of feral cats, gradually reduce the number of feral cats in colonies to extinction, and ensure the feral cats have the best quality of life. As for the argument that feral cats kill too many birds-humans and their ever encroaching development on bird habitat kill more birds then ferals ever will. Should we "humanely" kill humans? If we could ask feral cats whether they'd rather be killed at animal control or fending for themselves what do you honestly think their response would be? Ideally there would be no feral cat colonies but the reality right now is that there are thousands of ferals and we have been picking them up and killing them at shelters for years and it just isn't working for anyone.

According to Howard Elliott at TheSpec.com, in 2009 Hamilton Animal Control took in 1570 dogs and euthanized 167 (11%). During that period they took in 5,501 cats and "euthanized" 3,098 (56%). Obviously, Hamilton has proven year after year that killing these cats is not the solution and never will be. The definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing you have always done and expect different results. Don't believe the nonsense that the OSPCA and other so called animal welfare groups keep spouting that there is an animal overpopulation problem and that it is the fault of the irresponsible public. The fault lies with those who refuse to change how our shelters and animal controls are operating. You can bet your bottom dollar that the public in Hamilton are no more irresponsible and no less caring then those in Washoe County.

I volunteer at an animal control and I volunteered at the OSPCA for 8+ years so don't get the impression that I am anti-staff. I just want to see reform for all types of sheltering in Ontario. Volunteers cost nothing, rescue groups cost nothing, and foster care costs nothing. Volunteers are essential to implementing all components of the No Kill Equation.

Not persuaded?

Here is a great article about feral cats that addresses the issues: http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/pdf/feralcatissue_000.pdf.

and enclosed below are several excellent resources about The No Kill Equation:

Model companion animal legislation (urge your local municipality and the province to adopt) :

Nevada Humane Society partners with Washoe County Animal Services to save in excess of 90% of the companion animals they take in annually. Here is how they did it:

And much, much more re: feral cats and reforming animal control at:

Shelters and animal controls that adopt only parts of the No Kill Equation fail and never reach the goal. The only shelters that have reached the goal of saving all the healthy and/or treatable animals (>90%) embraced all 11 parts of the equation.

Isn't it ironic
that it is rescues and individuals who SAVE these doomed animals, spend thousands of their own money and NEVER kill any animals? The ONLY ones that KILL animals are the very same organizations that get PAID to do so. What's wrong with this picture!

And
what all those feline-hating respondents to our first Rally report fail to realize is that it's not just so-called stray or nuisance wild cats getting cruelly killed, it’s lost loved cats and loved dogs, too! Along with newborns, too! Wonder how they feel about canines in Hamilton? Can you imagine how much suffering is inflicted on those being swiftly heartstuck and also those poor animals witnessing and hearing it! Imagine the horrors inside there on the mornings when the vet sticks 83 cats and 7 dogs (Friday, June 24, 2011) before they even open!!!! Must be a mere 1 or 2 minutes for each animal, who is then left in the cage bleeding in agony ‘til death!!!

According to past info,
@6000 cats were killed by HAC in 2007. Now that figure is down to less than 3000 just by implementing ONE (allowing some rescues) of the many, many programs now being proposed for change! Imagine how many more can be saved by implementing more of these life saving programs! Please share your voices and help make this happen!

The Hamilton Burlington SPCA
apparently only has 'space' for 22 cats or kittens out front just happily waiting 'forever' til adoption. While the Animal Control out back may be routinely stacked up with well over 100 just waiting for either a miracle rescue or Cruel Death in only '72 hrs'! OSPCA has 'branches' that share (a bit) in their winfalls of cash. The 'affilliates' are on their own to garner their own cash. HBSPCA is an 'affilliate' getting no share of the big pie :) and actually PAY the OSPCA a yearly fee for the *privilege* of affilliation (and learn all the tricks of the trade of course). As for the Ospca, I personally wouldn't use the term 'wonderful' to describe this organization. For an educational look into their history visit http://www.ospcatruth.com...

UnlessItalic
changes are made it won't be long before the killings are done 4 times a week, and then 5, and then? This continual and ever increasing needless and CRUELLY performed killing of animals also speaks volumes to me of the Ethics and Priorities of vets who perform these cruel deeds without hesitation or intervention for changes. What ever happened to the Code of Ethics? If not Professional, then perhaps Moral? This is just so sad.

Rumor
has it the City of Hamilton pays a vet @$70 for each animal that it chooses to kill every 2 or 3 days per week in a cruel manner, almost 3000 last year, inside their Animal Control facility, which is located in the back of the same building as the SPCA, and this vet is also on the Board of Directors for Hamilton/Burlington SPCA.

Unfortunately
the Veterinary profession and the Ospca are both self-governed, self-regulated organizations free to set their own mandates and protocols, so it's up to us, the animal loving public, to educate ourselves on the many solutions to all these problems and demand changes at all levels of animal welfare. We're starting with changing Animal Control Shelter policies of needlessly killing healthy adoptable animals, by recommending the PROVEN solutions outlined in Nathan Winograd (http://bit.ly/48oU5)’s book Redemption (http://bit.ly/rq4DhG) which details all these problems and how to fix them. Join us at the HAC-STK group page, http://www.doiop.com/hac-stk, and at the next Rally on Saturday, July 30th, for much needed change to reduce the needless killings and SAVE animals, not KILL.

Every person
I spoke to in their cars (and I spoke to LOTS!) at the Rally on Saturday, June 25th, were truly shocked to learn about their Animal Control policies and most used the terms 'cruel' and 'inhumane' after learning. Hope the discussions continue and word spreads to many others in Hamilton! It was a good day! Thanks to all who came and joined this first Rally!

Exposure
Exposure Exposure by everyone WILL bring about change!

PLEASE
Join us and speak up for changes! More Exposure! Since our first rally, a rescuer has stated that the shelter has at least added an air conditioner and some huge fans for those poor animals, and the usual KILLING was cancelled last Friday (July 1, 2011)! Yaaayyy! Let's get the City to make some positive changes now to also help the animals! It has been far too many years. The animals have been dying waiting for this chance at life... they ALL deserve our help!

Sound Off with Guest Writer, Shar Wilson!

"Siberian Housing Arrangements," or whatever better term could be coined, would not only help the people involved, it would also help many Siberian Huskies themselves, because it would mean more available homes for them to be fostered/adopted into!

The irresistible beauty of your average Siberian Husky is the reason so many initally fall in love with this breed. However, all too often those who were expecting just your average dog are driven insane by the traits that aren't so apparent when they impulsively buy such a beauty: the cat-like mannerisms, the demanding nature of the breed, not to mention their aptitude for escapes that would put Houdini to shame [and Sibes usually execute these "Escape From Alcatraz" calibre operations at the worst possible time of one's day]. There are not so much holes dug in the backyard, as archeological excavations appearing when it seemed that the owners' backs were turned for only a few moments. The expensive repairs from the "lessons learned" aspect alone can frustrate even the lifelong dog-owner!

Those who do stay in love with Siberians often cite their quirky personalities and Husky-song as major aspects of the joy of owning these dogs. They are willing to go through the many high maintenance aspects of the breed for the pleasure of having such unique, gregarious, and just plain fun canine kid! Often their lives are centred around their dogs, which is not a difficult feat when a Siberian Husky is involved.

Many a Siberian-Husky-person these days has owned their own home at one time, however, through bad financial times have lost those homes.... personally-owned homes which in the past allowed them to freely live with a loud, high-maintenance breed of dog.

Those "Sibe people" who must now rent are generally looking at a market where few, if any, will fit into most common rental situations when their passion is to live amongst dogs that are loud, sometimes destructive, loud, enjoy howling and bouncing around the living room during "silly time", and did I mention loud?

There must somewhere be some homeowners who are themselves owned by Siberian Huskies, and who have wished their households were quiet enough to rent out part of their premises [basements, rooms, "granny flats", etc.], but wrote off the very [hah.... HAH-hah!] idea that they'd ever find tenants that could put up with noise level of the most awesome member[s] of their family.

However.... who better to rent one's spare living space to than a fellow bi-ped-owned-by-a-Siberian-Husky sort of person!

Who else but another Siberian Husky person could be understanding about the multivoice chorus of howls EVERY time the nearby fire station sends out a truck, the begging along the lines of "for heaven's sake, please-please-please NEVER leave this dog unsecured, even inside the fenced backyard, unless you can stay within about two feet of him/her while the dog has a long leash dragging from a harness" [if you've ever tried to chase down an escaped Sibe in the pouring, almost freezing rain of November wearing a housecoat, thin track pants, and slippers with no socks, you can TOTALLY understand that one ROFLMAO!!].... and all the rest of the general, divine madness of sharing life with any Siberian! Also, let's face it, these K9 kids can be like potato chips, as in "betcha can't have just o-n-e!", hence many a Siberian Husky-owned family has multiple dogs, heh-heh-heh.

So I put this question to Sibe-families who are homeowners: ever wished you could rent out a section of your home to help pay for some of those Husky-inspired home improvement projects, or should I also say repair projects? Maybe there'd even be a little left over after the dog-related stuff to shave a little bit off of your mortgage payment each month, too.... miracles can happen, you just never know!

I, for instance, could more than happily live in someone's old granny flat, listen to the fire-truck Husky sing-a-long at my upstairs neighbours, and not be a complaining-tenant-who-might-leave-and-spend-their-rent-money-elsewhere but instead laugh delightedly as my own Husky/ies join[s] on in and serenade me!

Of course, as protection for both landlords and tenants [canine AND human], there would need to be requirements, such as: all dogs on premises being fixed, crate training [for safety's sake as usual, otherwise Murphy's Law states that these little perishers will just end up needing surgical removal of SOMETHING or other from their stomachs], baby gates where needed, installation of recycling, etc., in places that are harder for Sibes to get at.... all that sort of fun stuff.

We could all help each other with tips and tricks we've learned from the Siberian Special Academy of Practical Life Lesson. Plus, what other tenant will be so willing to help you with installing that extra chunk of fence you want to dig in UNDER THE SOIL and wire it to the base of the existing fence, or set up that "sandbox" area for the outlet of those expert excavation skills of our Sibes? Not to mention the potential for even brief dog-sitting/walking/whatever carried out by folks who can actally comprehend that our dogs WILL take off, no matter what, if you let them off the leash/leave the gate open/leave the door open/yadda-yadda-yadda!
Please let me know what you think: Comments.... Types of places folks might like to rent/rent out....
Whatever!
Thank you :-

Greetings,

There needs to be an investigation made into Hamilton Animal Control. The animals are suffering, with minimal vetting, and being euthanized, usually in 72 hours. It is NOT open for puplic adoptions and only rescues can go in to save, but only if they are friendly with a specific person.

If you live in Hamilton and your cat gets out of the house, you should kiss that cat goodbye because if Hamilton Animal Control finds it, they are killed in 72 hours and no posting about found pets with pictures and locations is published. Most people in Hamilton are not even aware it exists as it is in the same building as the OSPCA. They just think it is the OSPCA in the building.

So you will need facts. There is a story about Jessie, a persian who was left to die at the shelter with no medical care, then rescued, and whose struggle is documented by AARF rescue. You can talk to their vet to confirm if the cat was vetted and the state that the cat was in when rescued.

There is a vet in Toronto you can also interview who has been trying her best to rescue as many as she can from this shelter but all the animals are sick with URTI. She has recommendations and is a vet. Please message me for her email if you like.

I have been threatened numerous times that if we go public (i.e. people trying to help), then the shelter will stop allowing this one woman to post the animals to rescues. I have been told to be quiet while they turn adopters away because they do not want to screen. I have seen first hand that when this one woman does not like you, you get blacklisted and cannot rescue from the shelter. If this one woman is busy, then animals die. If she doesn't like you, then animals die. Who is she? Not a vet, but only a volunteer. How can it be up to one person to decide which animal lives and dies? It sounds like Tim Trow syndrome to me! All powerful....

I have emailed the Hamilton mayor with no response. I called the OSPCA on Jessie and got yelled at by them. After stating that even if they are in the same bulding, THEY HAVE TO investigate Jessie dying in his cage and it is cruel. They did, and I got an email from this rescuer stating that the OSPCA investigated and they will not post the animals if this continues. I was threatened again!

Look at the links I will attach, and worse, look at the pictures. These are all animals that were, at some point, at this shelter suffering.

Cats at the shelter now on death row: http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=ON112

Lastly, even if you are a healthy animal, if you are brought into this shelter environment, you will get URTI and spend your last 3 days sneezing in a metal cage, unable to breathe. Why? Because these animals are left in their own filth.

I am not a rescue, just someone who cares. I am sick from all the emails I get about this place with no one getting involved because they do not want to be blacklisted.

Why do they not open this shelter to public adoptions a few days a week? Why do they not give the animals alpha interferon and start treating the animals the minute they come into the shelter as well as Azithromycin capsules to give EOD, to stop the URTI that is, and has been, a constant epidemic at this shelter?

Why do they take house pets and make them sick by taking them to this shelter without posting a found page? To give the people of Hamilton a chance to recover their lost beloved pets?
I know it is bad in Hamilton economically but seriously, if your cat gets out in Hamilton, you’re screwed!

There is a picture of Nayla, a cat at this shelter RIGHT NOW with a broken jaw. She is suffering right now and no one cares. How can this torture be in Canada? How can we sit still without helping?

Lilly
(Monday, May 16th, 2011)

P.S. I want to tell the OSPCA about Nayla but I am afraid of what will happen. Can you help? Investigate? Get this cat the medical attention she needs? Well, tomorrow the vet comes in the a.m. so maybe it won't matter. At least I told her story so that her life did not go unnoticed. I noticed her. I saw her picture and i reacted. What will you do to help?
